Evelpidou Niki
Professor in the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
Niki Evelpidou is a Professor in the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the founder–director of the MSc program “Geographic Information Systems” at NKUA. She has been actively working with GIS since 1992, developing pioneering applications of spatial analysis and natural hazard modelling within GIS environments.
Her research focuses on geomorphology, sea-level changes, palaeogeography, and natural hazards, with particular emphasis on adaptation and mitigation strategies grounded in geospatial data and GIS-based analysis. She has played a key role in integrating GIS into geomorphological research, coastal dynamics studies, and hazard mapping.
Her scientific output includes over 400 publications and 40 books. She has organized numerous educational workshops and conferences and is the founder of the initiative “Women in Geomorphology.” She also promotes geoscience outreach through initiatives such as the children’s book series “Environmental Stories.”
Her work has been recognized with multiple distinctions, including two honorary awards from the Academy of Athens, first-place innovation awards for a “green” coastal erosion management method in three competitions, and the Award for Outstanding University Teaching from NKUA for the academic year 2024–2025. In 2022, she was elected a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
